My Granddaughter’s Career Advice: “Just Start Crawling.”
Why the bravest step is often the wobbliest one. My granddaughter is the best teacher I know. Right now, her main goal is to get one knee in front of the other. She sees some
There’s a quiet power in the moments we choose to lay aside the fast-paced rhythm of our professional lives for the purposeful pursuit of human connection. Recently, I turned the key in the ignition and embarked on a 96-kilometer journey—not for a meeting or a conference, but for something more integral to life: lunch with a friend enduring life’s trials.
As I drove and saw the scenery rush past, I wasn’t thinking about how far I was going. Instead, I was thinking about the importance of my trip. It felt warm and welcoming when I arrived at my friend’s house, just like it always does with old friends. We ate together, but the food wasn’t the main thing. What mattered was being together, supporting and understanding each other.
Our conversation wasn’t about big achievements. We focused on being there for each other through life’s challenges. I listened more than I spoke, which became a quiet way to show support. These moments remind us that simply being there for someone is more important than we often realize.
Driving home, I felt fulfilled, and it wasn’t because of the food. I realized more clearly how meaningful personal relationships are in our lives. The comfort and strength we got from being together showed how our bonds helped us face life’s ups and downs.
It made me think deeply about how we humans thrive on connection. Our shared experiences and the support we offer and receive are the threads that tie our lives together. These threads strengthen not only our personal foundations but also shape the way we interact professionally. Each connection we cultivate can lead to collaboration, growth, and learning opportunities in ways that the digital world cannot replicate.
In a world focused on measurable achievements—like how much we do, who we know, or how successful we are—it’s often the special, unmeasurable moments with others that keep us going. Even a short experience can remind us of what’s truly important in life.
This makes me wonder: Do we check on our personal relationships as carefully as we monitor our career success? Do we understand how important it is to be there for each other?
Connecting with others personally isn’t a distraction from work; it helps us become more empathetic, caring, and potentially more successful. Being there for someone doesn’t always require significant actions; it can be as simple as having a meal together or taking a drive. It shows that empathy and real connection go beyond any barriers.
Let’s think about our relationships as we go through life and work. When was the last time you went out of your way, physically or in essence, to help someone close to you? How did it benefit both of you? Remember, in all our efforts, it’s our bonds with others that indeed show us who we are.
