The Art of Breathing: Your Untapped Superpower in Life and Growth

Have you ever caught yourself holding your breath in anticipation or letting out a deep sigh of relief? It’s fascinating, isn’t it, how our breath—this constant, quiet companion—can paint a vivid picture of our inner world without uttering a single word.

Breathing is not just about inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. It’s about unlocking an untapped superpower to dramatically enhance our career, personal growth, and overall well-being.

I was recently asked to present on breathing to a group of well-being practitioners . I am not a medical professional or a Yoga expert, but here’s how I see breathing right!

Why Breathe Right?

Imagine your breath as a magical bridge connecting your mind and body, ensuring they’re chatting amicably and working in harmony. When we breathe shallowly (which happens more often than we’d like to admit, especially when stressed), this bridge gets a bit shaky. Our body gets the memo that all is not well, which can rev up our stress levels.

On the other hand, breathing deeply and fully isn’t just about filling our lungs with air; it’s about sending a reassuring signal to our body that all is well, which in turn helps us remain centered and calm amidst life’s storms.

A Peek into Our Lung Capacity

Did you know that most of us use just a fraction of our lung capacity? Yes, instead of tapping into the full symphony orchestra, we’re getting by on a solo act. On average, humans use about 70% of their lung capacity at maximum exercise intensity. And this decreases with age.

Here’s a thought: What wonders could we unlock if we learned to harness more of this capacity?

Increased lung capacity doesn’t just mean more oxygen bouncing around in our body; it translates to better energy levels, sharper mental focus, and an overall sense of vitality. Imagine bringing these into your professional life or personal growth journey. We’re talking game-changers.

Science and the PNS: A Beautiful Friendship

Here’s where it gets interesting. Science has shed light on how breathing deeply and fully can be a love letter to our Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS). This part of our nervous system is like the peacekeeper in our bodies, helping dial down stress and bring a sense of calm. When the PNS gets a bit more play, our bodies and minds shift from tension and alertness to relaxation and renewal. It’s like telling every cell in our body, “It’s okay to rest now.”

Breathing Techniques and Their Impact

So, how do we harness this power? Let’s talk about breathing techniques. These aren’t just ancient wisdom passed down through generations; they’re backed by science and have been proven to impact our well-being profoundly.

  • Diaphragmatic Breathing: It’s like giving your mind and body a mini-vacation. This technique, also called Belly breathing, encourages full oxygen exchange and can significantly reduce stress levels.
  • 4-7-8 Breathing: This is a magic formula for tranquility. It involves inhaling to the count of 4, holding the breath to the count of 7, and exhaling to the count of 8. It improves sleep, reduces anxiety, and brings a profound sense of calm.
  • Alternate Nostril Breathing is your balance beam. It enhances mental clarity and focus, perfect for when you need to be at the top of your game.

Breathing Into a Better You

As we journey through life, facing its myriad challenges and opportunities, let’s not forget this powerful tool we carry within us at all times. Breathing right is not just about survival; it’s about thriving. It’s about stepping into our full potential, personally and professionally, with a calm mind and a vibrant spirit.

So next time you find yourself caught in the whirlwind of life’s demands, pause. Take a deep, intentional breath. Remember, you have within you an untapped superpower. Use it. Cultivate it. Let it guide you towards becoming the best version of yourself.
